Abstract:

Torres and Cape Hospital Health Service is dedicated to providing culturally safe and high-quality healthcare through the Torres Model of Care, which is led by the Indigenous Health Worker Workforce. Our collaborative approach to education reflects a shared commitment to strengthening local capabilities and growing a sustainable workforce.

By focusing on staffing development in community and in local language, we foster an environment where cultural heritage is central to both care and education. The multidisciplinary collaboration fosters hands-on skill development and strengthens teamwork across a wide range of disciplines, including administration, management, operational staff, Nursing and Midwifery professionals, and Indigenous Health Worker Workforce.

We utilise innovative teaching approaches including on site simulations, the use of Visually Enhanced Mental Simulation (VEMS) and resource and equipment familiarisation. Despite the challenges of delivering education across remote locations, we overcome logistical barriers to ensure that remote teams receive ongoing, culturally grounded professional development. This approach not only builds the capacity of our workforce but also supports the health service’s mission to enhance the quality of care while empowering communities.

Through these efforts, we are shaping a future where strength in diversity and community-driven education leads to lasting impact and improved health outcomes for all.
