1Murrumbidgee Local Health District
In a district that covers 33 sites including 2 Base hospitals, district hospitals and multipurpose centres, the workforce shortages have limited the availability of site based clinical nurse educators.
Looking at their availibity and the ongoing needs of a junior workforce we requested funding with additional graduates to include district nurse educators who are not based on site.
These educators mobilise for the workforce in critical areas and help develop new and graduate nurse employees.
The roles are not utilised on the roster for each site and instead are able to work Supernumery or alongside our early career nurses.
We have quickly identified the need to increase these roles as the requests from each site are multiplying daily. We had a very competitive application process for the roles including from very experienced educators outside of the district.
These roles have allowed us to focus on projects such as RN PiP and Virtual Care nursing assist, where there is ongoing training needs and education required. We have also investigated early career nurse’s leadership training where the district CNEs can assist in team leader allocation and in-charge of shift on site development.
MLHD are looking forward to developing these district CNE roles and hoping to help keep education and the development of our nurses ongoing in our staffing issues.
